Seriously Whacked #2
Seriously Whacked
by Jeff Strand
Installment #2
As reported December 19th in the Delirium Insider, Shane Ryan Staley received a very special package: “Inside this gift-wrapped Fed Ex box was a complete typeset, laid out, edition of In Delirium II, edited by John Everson. Not only did this book shock me, the names that were incorporated it in blew me away. John Everson put together this anthology as a Christmas present for me….I’d like to personally thank each and every one who took part in this cherished gift. I’d like to thank John Everson for not only editing this project, but also laying the book out and handing it over basically only needing a final copy edit, which ultimately means that the book should be up for preorder in the near future, as early as next month.”
However, Everson was surprised to receive a rejection letter a few days later. “Shane said that though the authors involved write with talent, in today’s difficult fiction market he was not confident that he could make the project a success,” said Everson. “He did wish us the best of luck in placing this anthology with another publisher, which was kind of nice, I guess.”
“I enjoyed what I read of IN DELIRIUM II,” said Staley. “But Delirium Books is currently closed to submissions, so it already had points against it. I was also a little annoyed that the editor sent an unsolicited complete manuscript without querying first. The stories were good, don’t get me wrong, but when an editor shows such disregard for the submission guidelines, it’s difficult for me to consider publishing their work.”
Because Everson did not enclose a SASE, IN DELIRIUM II was considered a disposable manuscript and has been recycled.

Comment by Mike Myers on 2 January 2007:
If only IN DELIRIUM II had contained a Jeff Strand original, perhaps it would have made it through the slush pile. Perhaps it would have become a literary icon, outselling the Bible and Quran combined, creating a unified feeling of fellowship throughout the world, ending strife between nations and abolishing world hunger. But no, all because the editor forgot to include a Jeff Strand original.
This is what it would have been like if the Wise Men had killed the baby Jesus or Sonny and Cher hadn’t broken up. Prepare for the Apocalypse people, and you can thank John Everson for it.
